Discover
Santorini
The most famous island in Cyclades, with more than 4.500 years of cultural
history, will capture you with its beauty and stunning Caldera views.
Many
reasons made this island famous worldwide and pretty much we've all seen a
picture of the dream island (pictures of Santorini have been used many times
for the global promotion of Greece as a tourist resort). Scientists connect the
island to the mythical Atlantis, the unique caldera, the energy and the beauty
of the island are the most important reasons for being ranked as one of the top
islands in Europe and one of the once-in-a-lifetime must see destinations of
the world.
Santorini
is, indeed, an island of mystery, as the volcano has affected not only the
morphology but the people of the island as well. Finally, the island is known
for the view from "Caldera", which is considered to be the most
fascinating view in the world.

Day available: Wednesday, Friday, Sunday
Language:English, Deutsch, French, Poland, Italian
Location: Elounda, Spinalonga, Agios Nikolaos, East Crete
Price: 50€
Spinalonga, Elounda Excursion
The route along the northern coast of the island takes us to the small fishing village of Elounda, known to the older of us from the popular 1970s BBC television series “Who pays the ferryman”. The village became also well-known through Belinda Jones’ novel “Out of the Blue” and lately, through Victoria Hislop’s world best-seller “The Island”. Today Elounda is a popular holiday resort, often visited by VIPs for the luxurious beach resorts that are situated in the area.
From there, we take the boat that gets us to the small and sorely tried island of Spinalonga. The history and the culture of the island of Spinalonga became one with human tragedy in the course of time. This small isle carries within the history of Ancient Greece as it served as a natural guard for the ancient city of Olous; the history of the Saracens as a hide-out for their pirates; the history of Venetians as their fortress; the history of Turks as their settlement; and the history of contemporary Greeks as their dwelling, or better, as the place where their leper would be sent into exile until 1957.
We stroll through the village roads, listening –along with our guide’s narration- to the cries and sighs of the diseased exiles, which seem like having been curved on the rocks and the walls of the houses and admiring the exquisite beauty of the area. Finishing our touring on this much afflicted place, we head for the small bay of Kolokitha, one of the most beautiful beaches on Crete. It is a remote beach with white sand and deep blue serene water, side by side with old olive groves, where we can swim and taste the delicious BBQ served on the boat.
After our short respite, we go back to Elounda, and then we move to the picturesque town of Agios Nikolaos, where we have our last stop. Here we have the chance to enjoy our coffee getting a perfect view of the magnificent lake, do our shopping in the traditional local shops and relax for a while before we hit the road for our going back.

Knossos Palace, Lasithi Plateau Excursion (half day tour)
Lasithi Plateau is located in eastern Crete, in the regional unit of Lasithi. It lies at an average altitude of 840 m and is home to 18 small villages. Vineyards, olive trees and picturesque villages form the diverse landscape of the Plateau, making it one of the most beautiful natural scenery to explore while in Crete.
Our first stop of the day will be the historical monastery of Panagia Kera or Kardiotissa which is located just before the village of Kera. The monastery is dedicated to Virgin Mary and serves as a nunnery nowadays. As many places on the island, the monastery holds a myth: The icon of Kyra Kardiotissa was stolen three times by the Turks but every time the icon returned to the monastery. The third time, to avoid losing it again, they tied it to a marble column with a thick chain. Upon your visit, you can see both the column and the chain. The frescoes and the icons of the monastery date back to the 14th century.
Then we head to the heart of Lasithi, passing by some breathtaking scenery, we will admire the white -sailed windmills that used to irrigate the land.
As we arrive at the famous village of Psychro, we will have a stop in a small family-run ceramic workshop. You can shop around while the owners teach us how to make our own pottery.
Next we arrive at the Dictean Cave, an ancient Minoan sacred cave where according to myths the goat Amalthea nurtured the infant Zeus when his mother Rhea tried to protect him from his father Kronnos. The cave was first excavated in 1886 and is filled with stalactites and stalagmites that will take your breath away.
We then arrive at Seli, a place with a breath-taking view of Lasithi plateau, where you can take beautiful photos, visit the renovated windmills and have a delicious local meal.
Next is a visit to a small olive oil factory that is located in the village of Avdou, where the owners will walk us through the process and offer us a tasting of their products.
Our last stop and the most important one is our visit to the palace of Knossos, the biggest palace of the Minoan times. Excavated by Sir Arthur Evans in 1900, Knossos is the “home” of the great Minoan civilization that flourished from c. 3000 BC to c. 1450 BC. Walk around the ancient rooms, the courtyard and learn about king Minos and the mythical Minotaur.
