Agios Nikolaos is the capital of Lassithi prefecture in eastern Crete. A beautiful coastal town popular for its signature sight of the Lake Voulismeni. Spinalonga is a now uninhabited small island, also known as the “island of the forgotten’’. It was initially built as a Venetian fortress, later used as a settlement by the Turks but it is mostly known for its most recent historical purpose as a leper colony between 1903 and 1957.

Your day trip starts early in the morning when our bus and tour guide pick you up from your hotel. While in the bus you get plenty of information about Crete, its history and culture. Our first stop is the coastal town of Agios Nikolaos where you have free time to scroll around the narrow commercial streets or enjoy a cup of coffee over the “bottomless’’ lake of Voulismeni. After that, we head to the famous village of Elounda that used to be a fishermen village but is nowadays one of the most luxurious areas of Crete, attracting celebrities from all over the world. From there, a short 15 minutes boat ride takes us to the beautiful island of Spinalonga. Arriving on the island, you can enter the historical site and enjoy a guided tour around the old market streets and the houses of the lepers, while learning about the heart-moving story of Spinalonga. Scroll around to find the former hospital and the churches of Saint Panteleimon and Saint George and have a glimpse of the past while discovering the life of lepers on the island. Following, we board back on the boat and our trip continues to Kolokytha, a beautiful beach where you can relax, have a swim in the clear blue waters and enjoy a delicious BBQ.

Our adventure starts very early in the morning since the gorge is situated on the western side of the island. Our first stop is in the vicinity of Rethimnon, where we have the chance to get our breakfast before moving on to Omalos Plateau. The walk starts from Xiloskalo, at the entrance of the gorge, where we enter this vast canyon of 18 klm that is considered to be the longest in Europe, with a width that varies from 2 to 40 meters and a depth of 250-600 meters. We usually need 6-7 hours to cross the rocky gorge down to the shore.

The path follows the route of Taras, a river with gurgling lucid water that gave its name to the ancient town which was located at the end of the gorge. On the way we can get a glimpse of the caves that formed a natural shelter for the Cretans in war times and now they are the natural habitat of the well-known wild goats, or kri-kri as they are also called. Halfway we come across the village of Santa Maria, which was abandoned by its last inhabitants in 1962.

The amazingly wild and unspoiled scenery, as well as the vegetation that we come in view of during hiking, is unequalled in relation to those in other places on Crete. The extraordinary rock formations, the rarity of the indigenous plant, flower and bird species, the rough downward ground, the impressive and primitive view, the exquisite landscape that has been under no human intervention, the unique sensation of awe and infinite wonder for the untouched grandeur will always be engraved on our memory.

Three kilometers prior to our exiting this majestic gorge, we reach the Iron Gates (Sideroportes), the narrowest spot of the route, just a few meters wide, but 300 meters high – an amazing contradiction that can cause nothing but awe. A bit later we arrive in the small fishing village of Agia Roumeli, where we have quite a long time to lunch and get a refreshing swim in the deep blue, crystal clear waters of the Libyan Sea, before boarding the ship that leads us back along the coast to the village of Sfakia, where we catch the bus for the return trip. On the way back we have the chance to admire Imbros Gorge, as well as the villages of Askifou and Vrisses.

An excursion for those who feel adventurous and are pretty fit. A tip for the ones who join in: good hiking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, an extra pair of socks, swimsuit and a light jacket for the evening hours are essential. (Samaria Gorge was acknowledged in 2010 as one of the wildest, most virgin and unique natural parks in the world and was included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) of UNESCO).

Lasithi Plateau is located in eastern Crete, in the regional unit of Lasithi. It lies at an average altitude of 840 m and is home to 18 small villages. Vineyards, olive trees and picturesque villages form the diverse landscape of the Plateau, making it one of the most beautiful natural scenery to explore while in Crete.

Our first stop of the day will be the historical monastery of Panagia Kera or Kardiotissa which is located just before the village of Kera. The monastery is dedicated to Virgin Mary and serves as a nunnery nowadays. As many places on the island, the monastery holds a myth: The icon of Kyra Kardiotissa was stolen three times by the Turks but every time the icon returned to the monastery. The third time, to avoid losing it again, they tied it to a marble column with a thick chain. Upon your visit, you can see both the column and the chain. The frescoes and the icons of the monastery date back to the 14th century.

Then we head to the heart of Lasithi, passing by some breathtaking scenery, we will admire the white -sailed windmills that used to irrigate the land.

As we arrive at the famous village of Psychro, we will have a stop in a small family-run ceramic workshop. You can shop around while the owners teach us how to make our own pottery.

Next we arrive at the Dictean Cave, an ancient Minoan sacred cave where according to myths the goat Amalthea nurtured the infant Zeus when his mother Rhea tried to protect him from his father Kronnos. The cave was first excavated in 1886 and is filled with stalactites and stalagmites that will take your breath away.

We then arrive at Seli, a place with a breath-taking view of Lasithi plateau, where you can take beautiful photos, visit the renovated windmills and have a delicious local meal.

Next is a visit to a small olive oil factory that is located in the village of Avdou, where the owners will walk us through the process and offer us a tasting of their products.

Our last stop and the most important one is our visit to the palace of Knossos, the biggest palace of the Minoan times. Excavated by Sir Arthur Evans in 1900, Knossos is the “home” of the great Minoan civilization that flourished from c. 3000 BC to c. 1450 BC. Walk around the ancient rooms, the courtyard and learn about king Minos and the mythical Minotaur.
